I AM LOOKING TO RESTORE MY GRAND FATHERS NAVAY FOOTLOCKER AS A GIFT FOR MY FATHER, IT HAS ONE BROKEN LATCH AND IS MISSING ITS KEY. AS IT IS FROM WWII AND KOREA IT OBVIOUSLY HAS QUITE A PATINA AND I AM ARGUING IN MY HEAN BETWEEN SIMPLY CLEANING IT UP A BIT WITH MINERAL SPIRITS TO KEEP THE PATINA LOOK OR DOING A FULL REPAINT. I'M NOT EVER LOOKING TO SELL SO I DONT CARE ABOUT DESTROYING RESALE VALUE. JUST LOOKING FOR SOME ADVICE, AND AND IDEA ON WHERE I CAN GET HARDWARE. THANKS.

Depends on the maker of the latch. GI WWII issue replacement latches can be found on eBay from time to time. I've replaced one myself once. If your footlocker has the same brand latch then you don't need to replace the entire latch as the locking part should mate up with the other half on your footlocker.
Use a Dremel or electric drill to grind off the heads of the rivets to pop the old latch off, the install the new one. The rivets that come with it are made of a soft metal but for ease of replacement in the future I used nuts and bolts to replace mine. I did the same thing to replace leather handles. Replacement handles can be found on traveling trunk websites very cheap. A lot of different latches and hardware for footlockers can also be found on these websites for vintage traveling trunks or steamer trunks.
