Model Show - Planes of Fame

There is going to be a model show at the Chino Planes of Fame. It is being put on by the Brewer Brothers. These are the same guys who put on a similar expo several months back that a few of set-up our displays. They really like having reenactors there. If you would like to go, I would contact them as a courtesy to let them know you are going.

The Brewer Brother's Model Kit Expo is Back for it's 10th Successful Show. In Celebration we have been blessed to be able to hold our 10th show at the World Famous Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino CA. The Show date is Saturday, September 25th, 2010. Check out the Flyer attached for details....there will be alot of really great deals on Models, Military toys, Military Uniforms and Insignia for collectors, Military Miniatures, Reference Books, Military and Aviation DVD's, Wargamming Terrain pieces, Toy Soldiers, Aviation and Military Artwork, and all kinds of various goodies to accompany your needs. We are expecting 80+ vendor tables along with approx a dozen WWII Military Vehicles including 3 WWII Tanks, Multiple Re-Enactor Groups, 1/6 scale Remote Control Tank Club, will be in attendance. All 7 large Hangers will be open to all attendees and the B-17G, Flying Fortress #44-83684, “Piccadilly Lilly II” will be open for free tours. The Planes of Fame Air Museum has 7 large hangers with over 100 WWII or earlier Aircraft on display.

We are expecting a large attendance of approx 500-1000. The Show will open to Vendors for set-up from 8am-9am and opening to the public at 9am and going til 4:00pm. Two Large HMGS WWII Wargames will be taking place for all to enjoy, as well as Brewer Brother's 1st ever IPMS USA sponsored "Model Make & Take" program for anyone who is returning to the hobby or has never built a Model kit before. additionally we will be having Race Car Track events for Big and Little Kids alike. Everyone is welcome to participate. There will also be Great Food including BBQ Chicken, Cheese Burgers, Breakfast Burritos, Smoothies, Shaved Ice, Kettle Korn, Chocolate Covered Strawberries, and more being catered in for the event.

It turns out I will be attending this show as well. I will setting up my usual display and pop up with weapons. Anyone who wishes to come and help should be there prior to 9am.

Anyone want to carpool with me should meet me at my house at 7am.

Any impression is ok. We will however be presenting the CHG as usual so should stick to units in the CHG. Particularly our own.

Bah....Last minute no go. Forgot I have to help out a friend move into his new apartment. I Repeat, no go.

Taisho and I set up a large display at the Chino Planes of Fame museum. Mostly weapons and my fathers items. Also present were the 12th SS, 6th Fallschirmjager (RPS) and the LHA 82nd Airborne. We were one hanger away from the show and only got over flow crowds but they were very ethusiastic. I believe we got two perspective recruits from this one, one Asian and one Hoale. Fortunately we were set up in a hanger, the outside temps hit 104.

I was approached by an old friend of mine who is a designer/developer for 1/6th figures and he works for Soldiers Story. He is interested in doing a figure of my father as a machine gunner. Only an idea at this point, maybe it will happen, maybe not. Still it was a pretty good highlight of the show for me. Likewise speaking with and sharing my fathers story with many of the people who came by. I also connected with one of the possible recruits and his girlfriend who also had a father in the 442nd. We are a minoirty group even within our miniority and share a bond thru our fathers. Overall, a very successful day.

God, the weather was hell over there. I thought I was going to be fine with my HBTs on but I guess not.

That's pretty sad, they didn't include you guys in the same building. Is it they just didn't have the room, all in one building?

The hangers were only so big with the museum aircraft on display in them. The vendors took up an entire building. We could have gotten far better exposure but the choice was to set up on asphalt in the full sun or in a hanger. The puzzling part was we were on one side of the vendor building while the military vehicle guys were set up on the opposite side of the vendors in front of another hanger. If would have put the military vehicles in front of our hanger then we all would have probably had better exposure. Everything sort of went together at the last minute though, remember this was the first show at this location these people have done and their main priority was the model expo, not us. We were icing on the cake, not the main attraction.

That is the problem with a lot of events, there is the main attraction, and then there are the sideshows. Also the main attraction is what is planned and cordinated, while the sideshows are left to fin for themselves.

It's the same problem with the Chino Air Show. While the actual Air Show is well planned and cordinated. The CHG Reenactor sideshow, is not. It isn't for lack of talent or abilties, it's we are a sideshow, and come into the planning cycle at the very tail end.

Also it seems what little involvement the CHG has, it gets commuincated four weeks before the event. So it forces all the units to scramble.

There's really not much to do about us being in the side lines of the events. Just kick back and enjoy the show....

.... and that is what unit attendance and participation is down from the high of May 2008 at the Chino Air Show.

Yet that should be expected unless we start our own events. We are after all riding on the coat tails of a planned event not necessarily geared toward our hobby. It's rare where we can do an event and our participation can become the main event.
