I know its been quiet lately and it will continue to be so for a bit. The last battle the first half of the year is the PTO next month and obviously the 34th wasn't there. Wrong theater.
After that the CHG goes dark for the summer. The next battle should be in September so you have time to consolidate, get your blanks, prepare your equipment or get your personal life in order. Whatever needs to get done.
I do encourage all to attend the PTO, either as Marine or Japanese. The Japanese unit has loaner weapons, uniforms and gear that makes it easy for people to try it out and join the PTO battle. We do a lot of things you don't see in the ETO battles such as use props, sound effects, booby traps, etc. The attendance for PTO battles has been strong and growing by leaps and bounds. People have been flying in from out of state just to attend. Its an entirely different experience from ETO battles. There is even a psychological aspect to it that is deliberately planned out to increase the overall impression during battles. We want people to go away after the battles feeling like they have at least partly experienced what was like to fight in the Pacific war. It was an intense war far different from Europe in many ways.
I believe we succeeded to some extent last year as I still get many people talking about the battle and they tell me things they experienced to me. Just last Sunday I had guys coming up to me and telling me how great the battle was. We sincerely hope we are keeping it fresh and will have new and more chilling things to come next month.
If you don't do PTO battles, your missing out. We have tried to make it as easy to attend as we can. Loaner weapons, gear, uniforms, even group tentage to camp in. On Saturday night we have a person making dinner for us and last year he only charged $5 for all you can eat. At least for the Japanese side. I can't answer for the Marines.
This weekend on Friday and Saturday is the Pomona Militaria show. There is one company that usually attends this show and they sell both Japanese Movie uniforms, boots, USMC uniforms and boots at very reasonable prices. The company is called Eastern Costume and their phone is 818-982-3611, address:
7243 Coldwater Canyon Avenue
North Hollywood, Ca 91605
Their booth is normally in the far corner of the building, you can stop by the Sendai display tables being run by Russell Nakaishi and ask him where they are, I'm sure he will have checked them out long before the show opens on Friday.
I already called them and explained we have a PTO battle coming up and have both Japanese and Marine reenactors looking for uniforms so they have been warned and and should have a supply of stuff to sell. When I bought my Japanese boots (and Marine too), I paid $50 for used Boondockers and IJA boots. New were $100 a pair. These are big human sizes not made for GI Joe dolls to wear.
So come and try the PTO. You won't be disappointed. If you are the beheadings start right after the battle... ;D
