As some of you are aware I have been playing around with creating maps. Unfortunately maps generally are of no value for the events we participate because:
1. The areas have little or no landmarks
2. We end up only battling in a 1/2 square mile area, even though the senario planners have a larger area in mind.
3. There are no objectives involving structures, i.e. take the farm house, take control of the bridge, secure a front on the north side of the river.
4. Next is the lack of maps in general of any of the areas we fight at
5. No pre-knowledge of where the battle zone is.
6. Senario are usually weak in their description before the day of the event
At the upcoming RPS Battle, the battle area is target rich with landmarks; buildings, bridges, a river, and a clear forest of trees. With the help of google earth it is very easy to isolated the exact area of game play. For the upcoming November Camp Roberts Battle I hope to create a battle map as well. For November Battle there will be two "cemeteries" so having a map will come in handy. Also with all the ground troops that will be there and with the use of radio communications, Maps will also come in handy.
Along those lines I was able to get my hands on a nice copy of "Map Reading for the Soldier" very well done with lots of pictures and diagrams, plus several maps and documents, and a corrdinate scale rulers and a protractor. This is actually better than the standard Army Manual, becuase of the pictures and the handy aids that come with it.
One very useful section among many, was the grid numbering systems and how to read a grid map
