Not sure if anyone else here can relate to this story, but similar situation actually happened to me.
My Grandfather was a WWII Scout and always kept his footlocker inside the closet. He always kept that locked. As a young boy one summer day he was going through some stuff for show and tell and I was curious enough to ask him about certain items. Of the things I remembered so well was the Japanese Katana, a 1911 Colt 45 pistol with white grips ('prolly ivory), & his medals. Leaning in the back of the closet were 2 rifles (a folded stock M1 Carbine & an M1 Garand) . Did not know what they were then but I remembered swinging that folded stock as well as him warning me not to get my thumb caught inside the chamber of the M1 garand rifle. Like all vets, they have lots of stories to tell about those items.
Always wanted to be Scout after that. From an Eagle Scout, Jrotc, to the military, the closest I have become was an Airborne Soldier of the 101st attached to an Air Cav Rapid Deployment Forward Assault team in the Unit.

Kool, my bro was attatched to the 1st Air Cav as a loader in an artty unit during the NAM back in '69. Was able to salvage some pics from my Mom's home. He was in Pleiku and Tai Nin, can't member which one was LZ Grant and LZ Jamie.

That was a really well done and thought out trailer. I wish more vets would have thought ahead like that. I have alot of things from my Dad but no idea what his thoughts were on any of it. He wouldn't talk about it.
